Toy Academy: Some Assembly Required by Brian Lynch

This book for 7- to 9-year-olds is about a handmade toy named Grumbolt. He doesn’t feel he fits in with all the manufactured toys but steps up when a crisis arises. Reviews state this is a funny, action-packed book. The illustrations by Edwardian Taylor are various throughout the book. It adds a fun touch to the story. I anticipate looking into the second book, Toy Academy: Ready for Action. Have your kids read this series?

The Candymakers by Wendy Mass

This middle-grade novel is about four children tasked to make the most delicious candy. The product description promises mystery, friendship, and plot twists. I’ve never heard of this book before or its sequel. Based on the reviews, it seems to be a winner among kids. Sign me up!

The Mozart Season by Virginia Euwer Wolff

Allegra is a young violinist competing in a young musician’s competition. She seems to learn a lot about Mozart and herself in this novel. The author is an accomplished violinist, so I expect this middle grade to be realistic.

Tunnels by Brian Williams

This middle grade is about Will, a boy who feels like an outcast. He discovers an entrance into another world. Some reviews say it is too dark for younger kids. I’ll let you know. FYI… there is also mention of underage drinking. Tunnels is the first book of six.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

I still haven’t read this book or seen this movie. It’s a coming-of-age story about high school. The main character, Charlie, is trying to navigate through this time of his life. I’m probably the last person on Earth who hasn’t read it yet. That will change soon.
