I have so many feelings about this next book so I’ll try to be concise. When a Donut Goes to Therapy by Erin Winters is about a main character (you guessed it, a donut) that experiences therapy for the first time. Donut is initially nervous because they don’t know what to expect. Soon enough,  they discover their therapist is on their team and the sessions can be fun too.

This book is important!! Unfortunately, my generation grew up with the stigma associated with therapy. As an adult, I have learned that everyone could benefit from it. After starting my self-healing journey, I realized that I need to prioritize therapy for myself and plan to start in the near future.

Winters, through a thoughtful rhyme scheme, tells the reader that feelings are okay to feel. She, a licensed professional counselor herself, lets the reader know they can talk to their therapist if they want to or not. The therapist is on their side.

Learning about emotions at a young age can benefit a child in the long run. Winters plants some important seeds that all families need.  In the back of the book there are gems of knowledge for kids and adults about emotions and what to expect from therapy.

I first read this picture book on Kindle Unlimited and I plan to buy a copy for my home to read to my kids often. This book was something even I needed for so many reasons. We need to honor all emotions as well as normalize therapy. I loved this book to the moon and back.

This picture book deserves all the stars and I highly recommend it for every home! Do you have a favorite book on emotions? Please share in the comments. Make sure to check out more Mighty Reader Monday posts for great children’s books.
