Katie Woo and Friends by Fran Manushkin

This is the first book of the Katie Woo series.  It follows Katie, an Asian-American, through her days at school, with her friends, and more.  This early chapter book features four stories with life lessons like learning from mistakes. The stories are cute and relatable for young kids such as losing a dog or losing teeth. At the time of this posting, there are a total of 52 books in the Katie Woo series.

Super Happy Party Bears: Knock Knock on Wood by Marcie Colleen

This book is targeted for 5-8 year olds.  There are fun and colorful illustrations on every page. It seems to have really happy bears and super grumpy villagers. Will they all get along? This is Book Two of the Super Happy Party Bears series.

Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements

After reading and loving Frindle by this author, it took no thought to snag this book off the shelf. This is a story about a boy who wakes up one day and is invisible to his family and the world. Kirkus Reviews on the back of the book states, “A readable, thought-provoking tour de force, alive with stimulating ideas, hard choices, and young people discovering bright possibilities ahead.” This sounds intriguing so I’m excited to read it.

Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison by Lois Lenski

I am a sucker for non-fiction books.  This middle grade follows the story of Mary Jemison. She was kidnapped by indigenous individuals then later settled on the Genesee River with a Seneca village. I look forward to learning about this true story.

The Apothecary by Maile Meloy

This middle grade has magic and potions.  It is about two kids, Janie and Benjamin, who set out to find Benjamin’s missing father. Based on reviewers, this book seems to promise high engagement and adventure. There are illustrations sprinkled throughout as well. I don’t think I’ve read a story set in London before, so I’m excited to start it.
