The Little Beach Street Bakery

The Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan is about a woman named Polly who moves into a run down flat near the beach.  She uses baking as an escape from her troubles and through it, has found a new life to enjoy.  It is so sweet.  The author writes so well that I added all her other books to my TBR list. A warning for those that care: there are a handful of random curse words.  Overall, I enjoyed  escaping  to the setting in this story.

The Uncommon Reader

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett is a delightful novella for book lovers.  The main character is a queen that discovers how enjoyable it is to spend time with a book. This new-found obsession frustrates her staff.  It is funny, adorable, and a quick read. You get to witness a character who falls in love with reading; what’s more to love?

A Man Called Ove

My first exposure to A Man Called Ove was watching the movie a few ago.  Earlier this year, I read this wonderful book by Fredrik Backman and, as is mostly the case, the book was so much better.  Backman introduces you to Ove, a grumpy widow who is ready to end his life.  Several attempts at suicide are interrupted,  mostly by the new neighbors with young children.   You witness how this young family softens Ove’s heart and gives him a purpose for living.  It is touching and oh-so-special. I am a Backman fan and will read many of his other books.

At Home in Mitford

When I miscarried, I asked my friends for a book suggestion that was no-drama and a light read.  Enter At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. This slice of life novel follows Father Tim as he takes care of the town.  It is funny, sweet, and cozy in the not-so-perfect life of Mitford. This is a whole series that I plan to read in the near future.

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe

I also finished Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber. The main character Anna Kate has to relocate to bury her Granny Zee. Anna Kate must work for two months at Granny Zee’s Blackbird Cafe before she can own her estate. Those two months change her entire world. I loved every second of this heartwarming story.

To Sir, With Love

A new addition is the sweet romance To Sir, With Love by Lauren Layne. It features Gracie Cooper who is struggling to keep her parents’ business afloat. This is a wonderful enemies to lovers romance with no big drama. It is a fun read and I talk more about it in this blog post.
