Emotionally Immature

On my journey of self-healing, I came across Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson. Right away, I knew I wanted to read it.  While growing up I had great parents but as you know, no one is perfect. I mostly wanted to read it to become aware of what emotionally immature adults do so I don’t do those things to my own kids.

The book you never knew you needed

While listening,  I thought of so many people in my circle: the friend who has to deal with an ex-husband, another that has an abusive parent, as well as someone with a parent or partner who is a narcissist. I truly feel this book could be valuable and potentially life-changing for most people.  We all have to deal with someone that is emotionally immature and it makes life hard.

Gibson does a fantastic job of breaking down all aspects of emotional immaturity. From how it affects our lives to recognizing an emotionally immature person, there is so much to learn.  It can be triggering and hard work to self-heal.  Gibson suggests talking to a trusted friend or trained therapist when dealing with the contents.  There are quizzes and checklists you can use to identify the emotionally immature adults in your life.

She also goes into detail about the four types of difficult parents stating that each person can be represented by more than one type. I liked the conclusion of the book where she discusses the characteristics of an emotionally mature person, including a checklist for choosing a life partner.

The author touches each subject with compassion and empathy, sprinkling relatable stories from clients that drive home a point.  It was helpful that she included a ‘How To’ section when trying to confront an emotionally immature person.  If you decide to experience this book, I would suggest a physical copy so you can take notes.  I plan to get a copy myself. I have a lot to digest in this book.  This is a true gem.
